Lily Quan

Writer/Editor

about

I started editing back when the Internet was just becoming mainstream. In those days, if you wanted to research a topic, you had to physically go to a library and search through a card catalogue or microfiche. When was the last time you heard that word? The media might have changed, but the need for clear communication hasn’t.

I have also honed my editing skills along the way. I studied editing at Humber College and Ryerson University and have been a long-time member of the Editors’ Association of Canada, where I once served on the Toronto branch executive. My favorite punctuation is the semi-colon; it sets up the expectation for something more. I have worked on websites and other e-materials, brochures, ads, catalogues, business proposals, direct mail promotions — the whole gamut. I am also fluent in French, the virtue of being a French major in university. I taught French immersion in Toronto, and I have done bilingual copy editing and proofreading.

As for writing, I guess I’ve always been a writer. That’s what all writers say: It’s always part of you. I also studied copywriting at Humber, and I am trained to write in all kinds of styles in different media. Please have a look at my writing samples in my portfolio.
